Friday afternoon I decided that it would be fun to go see how life is in Burgerweeshuis in Deventer, so I bought a ticket for the show of the Truckfighters. The show started relatively early, and since it is an one hour drive this meant I had to leave early, the first band started at 19:30. As the Truckfighters are not traveling alone on this tour.
I have been this lucky for a while, as I have been to many loud/metal/rock concerts this year, and the advantage is that they usually bring more than one support act. I like that, because I enjoy finding new music.
The Truckfighters have taken two bands with them on tour, Wizzerd en The Deadly Vipers.
Wizzerd
The evening started with an almost empty venue, and I was not even that early, there were about ten people standing around, but fortunately as soon as Wizzerd started to play the venue started filling up.
This was one heck of an opener, what a terrific live band to start the night with, full of energy Wizzerd started its set. The band travelled across the pond from the USA to join the Truckfighters on this tour, and they are a great support act for a band like Truckfighters.
The music is dynamic, the guitars are fantastic, my only comment is about the bass. The bass was so loud that it was overwhelming, and hard to ignore, it unbalanced the music a bit, which was a pity. There were a couple of songs where they could tame the bass fortunately. But my suggestion to the band would be, just a tiny bit lower volume on the bass would have made the set even better. Just to be sure that I am not complaining about something intentional I did listen to the album before writing this review which has the right balance. Despite this minor side note it was a really good show.
Deadly Vipers
The evening continued with the Deadly Vipers, after a very energetic show of Wizzerd, I thought it would continue to develop, so I went in with high expectations for this second band.
The venue had filled up to the max and the die-hard Truckfighter fans were showing there faces in the front rows. And these came in many age categories, even some children came to the show, I spotted 2 that were both under 14 years old.
The Deadly Vipers, are from France. The set up for the band is different than that of Wizzard, the second guitarist was traded for a keyboard, that was packed inside it's travel case, very practical indeed but not so pleasing for the eyes.
The band itself also was a bit quiet, and that had nothing to do with the music they produced. Where as Wizzerd and Truckfighters would be jumping, running on stage, provoking the audience this band played there show to perfection, but the audience got not much specticals in return.
Then there was the questionable fashion choices of the frontman, why that blouse, while you are wearing a cool band shirt under it. This minor detail bothered me, because it wasn't straight, because it was hanging by only one button.
It was a decent show but I was just missing something, something that would make it stand out.
Truckfighters
A little bit dazed by the previous performance, the evening continued with the band we all had come to see, the Truckfighters. These guys from Sweden sure as hell know how to put on a show. They started playing and it was very loud but so awesome!
The band is not very talkative but that is oke if you can play like that, everything was just right. The guitarist was very energetic. The first thing he did when he came on stage was take off his T-shirt which went into the audience, and left him to play in only a pair of red shorts.
This guy he can play that guitar behind his head, on the ground on his knees it did not matter it still sounded amazing. He also very much enjoyed himself and was in constant contact with the audience. The little boy that was standing a little distance from me in the front row even got to play a bit on the guitar. I was in the second row for the most part of the show, and I was glad to because when you play like that it comes with lots of sweat, which was dripping from the guitarist pinky right into the audience. That's rock and roll.
The drummer drumt like the hounds of hell were chasing him down, it was a contant steady factor in each song. And even he had spotted the children in the audience. There was a little girl that was demanding is attention because she wanted to show the drummer that she was also wearing a Red Fang outfit, it did not go unnoticed by the drummer and I thought it was really cute.
Of course the favorites could not be missed in this show, so Manhattan Project and in the encore Desert Cruiser was played. Desert Cruiser turned out to be everybody's favorite and the entire audience repeated the words "I'm running out of fuel, I'm running out of gas" back to the band. That was fantastic!
All in all have had a fabuleus night and I am so glad that I convinced myself to go. It gave me new energy and I went home with two new patches for my jacket (Wizzerd + Truckfighters) and a new T shirt to go with it. (The boyfriend had already taken his swing at the vinyl collection).
