Finding Flight Cases, Gigs Weekly, The Dead South, DeWolff, Appelpop

It has been quiet here at the blog for a while, high time to get back to the concert agenda I would say, high time for a new Gigs Weekly! The festival season is almost over, but the venue agenda is already filling up with concerts for the fall. This week I have a couple of concerts for you, starting on Wednesday with a band I am a big fan of. Let's get started.

Finding Flight Cases, The Dead South

Wednesday 6 September 2023: The Dead South - OLT Rivierenhof, Deurne, Belgium

Unfortunately they are not playing in the Netherlands this fall, but they have one last stop, at our neighbor in Belgium. It might be a bit of a drive, but I think this band will definitely be worth your while The Dead South is one of those bands that has been on my go see live list for the longest time, however have not yet managed to see them play. Their sound is amazing with this raw voice, banjo and acoustic guitar. It reminds me of those old western films. This show is the last on their European tour, then they continue to the UK and Australia afterward.

Finding Flight Cases, Squid band,

Friday 8 September 2023: Squid - TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht

This is a band I have to thank 3FM (radio) DJ Joerien Renkema for, as she used to have this item in her program called the "Muziekcorrespondent" where she presented new music to the 3FM audience. Squid's song "Houseplant" was introduced to me this way. It stuck, it is so catchy and fast-paced I really like it, and at the time it was very renewing. Squid mixes postpunk with jazz and kraut rock, which is what gives them this unique sound. Are you interested in something a little different? Go check them out, there are still tickets available, as per usual click the title link to go to the ticket page.

Finding Flight Cases, Alain Johannes,

Friday 8 september 2023: Alain Johannes - Hedon, Zwolle

Alain Johannes, to me this is an unknown name, but he is not that unknown in the music industry, as he has written many a song for bands such as Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures. He produced for Jimmy Eat world and even wrote a song for Adam Lambert. Not a small name as it comes to songwriting and producing. In between all his work for other artists, he has also written his own albums, which is the music that he will be representing at this evening. For this tour he has taken with him, the Dutch band Iron Jinn. A Dutch stoner rock super band, which will also be performing with Alain Johannes as the backing band. This makes the evening definitely more interesting for me, as I really like Iron Jinn. I got to say though this evening will not be for everyone, it is for the die hard music lovers of the genre. So are you that die hard? Go on over to the ticket page, as there are still tickets available.

Finding Flight Cases, The Mary Wallopers

Friday 8 September 2023: The Mary Wallopers - Rotown, Rotterdam

Is Zwolle of Utrecht too far to travel for you? No worries I have got you covered, there is also this cool concert going to happen in Rotown, Rotterdam that you might like. The Mary Wollopers, I have written about them before in my Eurosonic post in January. It was one of my go see bands for Eurosonic, this Friday you will get another chance to see them play. Their music is traditional Irish songs, comparable to the Dubliners, and also might be interesting for fans of Flogging Molly. One thing is for sure, it will make your beer taste even better, 1 Guinness please!

Finding Flight Cases, Appelpop 2023 banner

Friday 8 and Saturday 9 September 2023: Appelpop - Tiel

One of the weekend bangers for you, I have two, but firsts Appelpop. Every September this festival takes place in the center of Tiel, it is a free festival to visit. The line-up consists of mainly Dutch artists, this year on the main stage among others Bløf, Krezip, Maan, Kraantje Pappie and Nielson, the big names of the last couple of years. The Go-Tan and Blossom stages offer a more divers range of artists with My Baby, Personal Trainer, DeWolff, Blanks, Elephant, Hang Youth and John Coffey.

Finding Flight Cases, Popronde Nijmegen, 2023

Saturday 9 September 2023: Popronde - Nijmegen, various locations

It is also that time of year for that other free festival, the popronde, which kicks off every year in Nijmegen. For those who are not familiar with the Popronde, this is a festival for starting bands and artists, the Popronde visits 40 cities throughout the Netherlands, where everyone can enjoy up-and-coming talent. Every year, approximately 100 artists are selected to showcase their talent. The Popronde takes place from September to November, for all current information click on the link in the title, there is too much information to share in this post. So the start is in Nijmegen on Saturday, September 9th. In the afternoon, you can start early at De Basis for the previews that take place there. In the evening you can continue the program in the city center of Nijmegen.
